REM The following loads CD-ROM driver but I have not activated it since the internal CDROM drive is detected without it. Can’t tell if it is correct since I could not get past the low memory problem. REM the following is the XP USB 2 driver for LACIE external drives- Not sure if it is the right one for DOS.

This does not find the LACIE external USB HDD. REM the following is an aspi mass storage driver for usb- connected HDs and compactflash memory cards. REM The following line loads Panasonic's universal USB- controller driver This prevents the drive from automatically replacing the bad sector with a good one from the spare sectors shipped on all drives when data read errors occur. I have tried remming them out, w no effect. One of the features of Spinrite 6, which seems to have been missed, is that IDE sector sparing (and other features) are disabled during data recovery process.

REM not sure if the above lines are required, but Spinrite does not like it as it complains about low memory. Here is what I am putting in the config.sys, but it is not working for me: After many trials I have not been able to make it work yet.
#SPINRITE 6 STUCK SOFTWARE#
So I have been trying to get USB2 driver loaded at the DOS level in the same boot CD or floppy that the regenerator software gets loaded to. I could not find any BIOS setting that would turn USB on in my Sony Vaio GRT270P. I only have access to laptops and removing the USB drive from its shell and connecting it to the IDE of a PC is not readily an available option for me. Unfortunately both these software run at DOS level and are geared toward internal PC drives. I have tried the Spinrite 6.0 which does the same thing as the HDD Regenerator and attempts to fix magnetic disk errors that are cause of bad sector. Low level format is not an option, since my half terrabyte of data is very improtant to me (family video and pictures). Would you consider 'system restore in safe mode from the command prompt'Īn option on this occasion? (F8 on reboot)Įdited by petewills, 04 December 2009 - 11:23 AM.I emailed LACIE Tech Support, but they were not much help. Recovery software, I was also ignorant of Linux at that point).Īs you have mentioned Steve Gibson, his site has some excellent free programsĪnd it is useful for checking your computer's security (Shields Up!, etc.) (Got the data off the failed disk, by putting it into an external cage - didn't need You're right, it can sometimesĭo more harm to run these programs, but on the other hand, you cannot ignore

Tried Spinrite 15 months ago, on a failed disk after running it for 3 days, I gave upĪnd had my money back - the guarantee is 100%. You can then work on fixing the drive at your leisure, or just reinstall, unless the I use this cd everyday to diagnose and recover files from dead or damaged computers.Ĭouldn't agree more, Ken - Linux Live CDs (Ubuntu, Mint etc.) can be lifesavers. It will also automatically find and enable most wired or wireless networks and includes firefox fully operational on load. The link on the page goes to the current live cd download which is a bit better at finding and automatically mounting your windows drive and flash/external drives than the version the tutorial was written for. Linux is not idiot proof either so follow the instructions. I met Steve long ago and have great respect for his products, but they are powerful rather than idiot proof. If you have a hidden recovery partition, some tools can damage it because the hex id used to hide it looks like something that needs to be "fixed". You should do this or some other method of backing up your data before trying anything, including spinrite that writes to the drive or attempts to fix it.
